....Why hasn't most of the Western world heard of Jiaogulan? The reasons probably lie with the unique history of Jiaogulan.  Chinese herbs and medicinals (for example Ginseng, Gingko Biloba,  Dongquai ) became popularized in the US primarily through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practiced in the U.S by Chinese immigrants and then spreading to broader use by the alternative healing community. However, Jiaogulan receives only the briefest mention in the TCM classic texts.  How did that happen? Read more below.

....In the 1970s the Chinese government asked scientists to research the unusually large number of centagenarians in the small mountain provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi and Shicuan . In addition to unusual longevity the researchers found low incidences of many common ailments associated with aging including, diabetes, high blood pressure, Alzheimer's and cancer. After over 10 years of study they found one common thread. A plant the locals called "xiancao" the "immortality" plant. The villagers drank it several times a day simply because it tasted good and is naturally sweet. Researchers discovered in the lab that this simple mountain herb, called Jiaogulan, had much more to offer than just good taste.
